The Oasis Congregations Program

There are really two types of Oasis Congregations . . .

Oasis Covenant Congregations: have completed an intentional process of reflection and education, signed a public affirmation of commitment to LGBT people, participate in programs and actions that advance and fulfill the mission of Oasis/California, and typically provide financial support for Oasis/California's ministry.

  • This process involves approval by the Vestry or governing board of the congregation.

  • These congregations may appoint a member to the Oasis Board and may also appoint one or more Oasis California Contact People for their parish.

How to become an Oasis Covenant Congregation.

  1. Contact us.

  2. Complete an intentional process of reflection and education

  3. Vestry approves a public affirmation of commitment (sample here - each parish may revise or write their own).

  4. Submit copy of vestry resolution along with name of person named to represent your parish on the Oasis California Board. Additional Oasis California Contact People may also be appointed for the parish.

LGBT-Friendly Congregations: are other congregations in the Episcopal Diocese of California that have self-identified as LGBT-friendly.

  • The rectors/vicars of such congregations have asked that their communities of faith be listed as inclusive, welcoming places.

  • These congregations may appoint one or more Oasis California Contact People for their parish.

How to become an Oasis LGBT-Friendly Congregation

  1. Contact us.

  2. Rector or Vicar submits letter asking that their communities of faith be listed as inclusive, welcoming places along with name of one or more Oasis California Contact People for the congregation.

To become either kind of an Oasis Congregation: just send an e-mail to us. We'll walk you through the process and answer any questions you have. If you need one, we'll also try to send a Board Member to a meeting at your congregation. These congregations may appoint one or more Oasis California Contact People for their parish.

Current Oasis Congregations should check out the Oasis Congregation Page for the latest news.

More information:

Most of the information in the links below is addressed toward congregations considering the Covenant Congregation process, however, it will be useful for any congregation in discerning how it might engage issues of inclusiveness and Oasis's ministry at any given time.
